About Muzaji

Leather backpack craftsmanship

Muzaji began in 2015 when three leather craftsmen in London decided to create backpacks that would last decades, not seasons. What started in a small workshop in Shoreditch has grown into a brand known for genuine leather goods made without shortcuts.

We source full-grain leather from tanneries in Italy and Spain that have been operating for over 80 years. Each backpack takes between 12 and 18 hours to complete. Our team of seven artisans handles cutting, stitching, and finishing entirely by hand.

The workshop on Richmond Avenue produces 35-40 backpacks monthly. This allows us to maintain consistent quality and inspect every seam, buckle, and zipper before a product reaches you. We don't mass-produce because we believe a backpack should improve with age, not fall apart after a year of use.

What Drives Our Work

Our approach is straightforward. We make leather backpacks that function properly and look better over time. This means selecting materials that develop character with use and construction methods that hold up to daily wear.

Material Integrity

We use vegetable-tanned full-grain leather with a thickness of 1.8-2.2mm. This leather develops a natural patina and can be repaired, refinished, and conditioned for 15+ years of active use.

Transparent Process

Every backpack includes documentation of its materials: leather origin, hardware specifications, and thread type. You know exactly what you're buying and how to care for it properly.

Repair Over Replace

We offer lifetime repair services at our London workshop. Zippers, straps, and stitching can all be replaced. Most repairs are completed within 5-7 business days.

Our Expertise

Our team has accumulated 73 combined years working with leather. This includes pattern making, saddle stitching, edge finishing, and hardware installation. Three of our craftsmen trained in traditional English saddlery before joining Muzaji.

We specialize in backpacks because the design requires structural integrity. A bag that sits on your shoulders for hours needs proper weight distribution, reinforced stress points, and hardware that won't fail under load. Each design goes through field testing with cyclists, commuters, and travelers before production.

Since 2015, we've produced 4,200 backpacks and maintained a return rate below 2%. Most returns are for sizing preferences, not defects. This reflects our focus on durability and function over trends.
